Asset and maintenance management is about promoting the longevity, reliability, and safety of all kinds of systems, equipment, and structures in the most economical way and with the least waste. Just as one does not keep accounts "somehow," good maintenance management requires educated people who rely on a reliable software system that supports known rules. Anything else would be risky, cause waste, and be costly in the long run.

Many, including myself, have long felt that the field does not receive the attention it deserves. The explanations are probably varied. For example, it is human nature not to prioritize what is not already broken. We are encouraging people to think long-term by preventing failures before they happen, ensuring the longevity and reliability of equipment and structures, personal safety of employees, and environmental safety. Having said this, it is worth reiterating that many companies and institutions in Iceland, as elsewhere, have taken asset and maintenance management seriously and have generally reaped better-run companies financially and socially. Additionally, it can be noted that attitudes towards the field are changing for the better, which can probably be partly attributed to society's demand for more humane companies, increased sustainability, better energy efficiency, and less waste. The role of the DMM software system is to support well-thought-out and implemented asset and maintenance management.
