As we know, the employees and residents of Grindavík are facing unprecedented circumstances. Grindavík locals are known for their resilience and determination, working tirelessly to restore infrastructure and ensure the safety of their town. Before the seismic activity began, the municipality of Grindavík had already made significant progress in implementing DMM for asset and maintenance management, including various repairs and, in particular, preventive maintenance and inspections. One of the key benefits of using a software system like DMM is the discipline and structure it brings, which in turn leads to more consistent execution of tasks, better organization, more efficient work processes, and improved documentation and data handling. It is well known that when municipalities, companies, or institutions face uncertain conditions, operations that rely on structure and planning—such as asset and maintenance management—can suffer. Processes become less structured, tasks are improvised, and documentation is often postponed or forgotten altogether. This has not been the case in Grindavík. Tasks and related information—such as asset condition assessments, damage evaluations, and repairs—continue to be recorded in DMM. As presented by Sigurður R. Karlsson from the municipality, this was a deliberate decision made on November 11, 2023: all deviations and their handling were to be documented in DMM. This decision has simplified processes and provided a solid foundation for successful follow-up actions. This is an outstanding example for any company, municipality, or institution looking to implement more structured practices in maintenance management—typically under far better conditions than those currently faced by the people of Grindavík. Well done!

DMM has long offered functionality for registering employee work tools and estimating time on tasks based on roles and down to individual employees. Additionally, DMM allows users to create so-called presets/favourites to save and store specific screen views. Systems like DMM offer virtually unlimited possibilities for retrieving and organizing information, so it’s important to be able to “save” selected views that users want to access repeatedly. It is very common among companies with structured asset and maintenance management to plan the upcoming week carefully, ensuring that tasks are well scheduled, ready for execution, and that workload is reasonably distributed among employees. In the DMM web portal, DMM 4, the presentation of this data has now been made more visual, allowing planners to quickly assess whether task distribution among individuals and teams is reasonable. These views can be saved as presets and bundled into so-called perspectives. Perspectives can store selected live “information views” from DMM, which managers can quickly access during, for example, Monday or morning meetings to review upcoming tasks with staff and fine-tune as needed.
